One place that I have always wanted to visit is the redwood forests. I have seen pictures, but they cannot possibly capture their greatness.
The huge redwood trees of California are amazing. They are the largest living things on earth and the tallest trees in the world. They are also very slender trees.
Some of them are 300 feet high and over 2,500 years old. One would think that trees so large must have a tremendous root system that reaches down hundreds of feet into the earth to keep them upright and strong. However, the redwoods have a surprisingly shallow root system.
If you got down on your knees and examined the redwoods’ root system, you would find all the roots are intertwined. They are locked into each other. When storms come, winds blow, and lightning flashes, the redwoods remain firm. The trees support and protect each other. Each tree is important to all the other trees in the grove. Another interesting fact is that they are sheltered from the heavy rain and only mist falls to keep them healthy and vital to each other.
Every one of us is vital to the life of the community. When the strong winds rage we can support each other because we are intertwined together – locked in to each other, giving each other strength.
The Bible speaks about the way God designed us to live in community. When we are rooted in community, we are a blessing to others in need. We can also have a powerful impact on the world around us when we are interlocking our roots together in love.
Loved the sermon, the redwoods are beautiful. I have only seen pics but they are lovely, just like people grounded. If we stay grounded in the Lord we will stay strong and be able to reach up.
