Dreams do come true! An unexpected blessing from the community through Whitby Caremongers to place a “Community Garden” in what was formerly a play area can now give people a lot of hope.
“This is the first summer so the program isn’t large,” says Major Donette Percy, Community Ministries Officer. “But we hope to change lives. It’s more than a hobby or a place to grow healthy food. Its an opportunity to give families a place to learn, a place to go and something to do. a place where friendship can be developed, a place to get their hands dirty and experience new growth “.
Carolyn Kitney, Program Coordinator for Family Services says, “We hope that in 2021 People with low-incomes no longer feel trapped by poverty and food insecurity. Despite tight budgets the community garden offers nutritional food and improves health and well-being”.
Our dream is that the “Community Garden” will foster a sense of value and help people reconnect with their community, motivate them to make changes in their lives and make them happy. Teaching others gardening skills not only enhanced their self-worth, the physical activity helped them stay strong and maintain their independence
And so The Salvation Army in Whitby has proven that dreams to come true with smiles all around. We hope to spread more smiles in 2021!!!
