What does Forgiveness look like?

As we repent and reflect, we are reminded of the incredible forgiveness God has extended to us through Jesus Christ. Forgiveness is at the very core of the Gospel. Without it, we would remain trapped in our sins, unable to experience the freedom that Christ offers.

Jesus teaches us to pray, “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (Matthew 6:12). Notice the connection between receiving forgiveness and extending it to others. On the cross, Jesus modeled this perfectly when He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).

Forgiveness can be one of the hardest things to practice, especially when we have been deeply hurt. But Lent reminds us that just as we have received God’s grace, we are called to extend grace to others. Corrie ten Boom, a survivor of the Holocaust, said, “Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hatred. It is a power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness.” Forgiveness is not optional for followers of Christ; it is a pathway to freedom.

Is there someone you need to forgive this Lent? Perhaps it’s a friend, a family member, or even yourself. Whatever the case, remember that forgiveness is not about excusing what was done but about releasing the burden of bitterness and choosing to walk in freedom.

Lent is more than just a season—it is an invitation to deeper communion with God. It is a sacred time to slow down, to turn our hearts toward Him, and to prepare for the joy of Easter. But this journey is not a passive one. It calls us to actively engage in repentance, reflection, and forgiveness in ways that shape our daily lives and intentions.

Lent is a journey—a journey of surrender, of growth, and of renewal.

As we repent, reflect, and forgive, may we be transformed by God’s grace and emerge from this journey (season) ready to rejoice in the power of Christ’s resurrection on Easter morning.
